Where is that Baby?

Welcome to Algeria and Switzerland.  The rumpus is over and my home is decorated.  Hosted a party yesterday.  It's so great that Duke Boy can cook.  He can holler too.   You heard him all the way down the Hooch during the Alabama game yesterday.  Roll Tide.

Advent .  I love worship during this season.  There are lots of good Advent books out there for devotionals.  Locate one and be still and reflect on why Jesus came as a baby and not as a warrior.  Be vulnerable to where His spirit will lead. Be astonished at what you discover.  Be ready for the messiness that babies can bring.  They aren't always sweet and sleeping.

Blessing and thankfulness on all the prayers for my friend in Florida.  No tumor on her last MRI.  Great news.  The Baby is out there climbing on our hearts.

Look at those astonished wise men.  Our family painted this one when Hedgie girl was little.  One of my favs.
Peace for the day.

Tired but happy

My rumpus is tired from the rumpus.  I just unpacked my most favortist--I know that's not a word, but it matches my feeling the bestest--box of Santas. A box that held the little guy that started all this madness.  My parents gave him to me when I was little--he is a bank--they were probably trying to also encourage a habit of saving $. Unfortunately, that part of the message didn't take hold.  Santamania did.

Unfortunately, I just noticed there is a box of my favortist Christmas teapots missing.  Hmmm???Garage??  Please say it ain't so.

Guess the rumpus is on-going.  Decorating tip of the day--"never underestimate the power of a string of white lights."  I'll be passing the hat for my power bill later.

I am happy to report that at the table where we eat there are 3 out of 4 places where one could sit and enjoy a meal.  There are two spots in the livingroom for tired rumpusses or rumpi(??? ) and several spots in the den.  I did not fill Duke Boy's chair or block the view of the TV.

Time to get ready for work so I can get some relief.

Wild Rumpus time

"Hand me the spray paint and super glue so the wild rumpus can begin."
                                                         Karen EB

Do you ever say you'll do something without looking at your calendar?  Perhaps it's a commitment that's a year in the making, and you know it won't be a problem.  You have a chef and he'll cook anything if you tell him a year in advance! You have a house and you have more Christmas decorations than the windows at Macy's.  It's a year away.  It's only for a few friends in your circle from church.  It's a breakfast.  This isn't hard.  Yes, please come to my house next Christmas.

It doesn't matter that you've just had a big breakfast with a hostess who has more Christmas decorations than Macy's, Tiffany's, and Target--OK--I couldn't think of another place.  You have just eaten at a huge table with fine china, embroidered cloth napkins, two or three kinds of crystal, and an array of eating utensils.  It might have been her silver but since I don't own silver, I didn't recognize it.  It was more elaborate than any breakfast meal I'd ever eaten and more delicious.  We had played Dirty Santa, I was happy with my gift, and I needed a nap.  Of course, I want you all to come to my house NEXT year.

Then November 1st was on a Thursday.  Do you know what happens when November 1st is on a Thursday?   Thanksgiving which is always the 4th Thursday since Tom Turkey was a little gobbler--is on November 22nd. Throw in the Alabama/Auburn game on  November 24th in Tuscaloosa --can you say time crunch?

December 1st, the date of my breakfast which was year away last December is the first Saturday in December.  Rumpus time---my house is in disarray again.  I only have 10 plastic tubs with Santas and Baby Jesus boys to unpack--I've already unpacked about twice that number.  I have even decorated two trees.
OK, they are only three feet high and sitting on chests but that's big--I don't do trees--not for the last six years.  Another story for another day.

I am glad to report that the bout with polio that I'd thought I was coming down with was only leg pain from carrying plastic tubs of Christmas stuff up from the basement.  I confess..Duke Boy did help.

It's almost time to head to the rumpus .  Spray paint and super glue are good items to keep in stock if you are planning on having one.  Items glued thus far--Santa's hand holding a bird house, wise men back on Nativity from the Holy Land via China, attempt at staff of Joseph from Ecuador --he really needs both hands free to give Mary some relief.  I probably need to stop at the Big W and stock up for the rumpus.

Peace on earth, in the Valley, and in my home on the Hooch soon.

News from the Prettiest

My new stadium seats need footwarmers.  Don't get me wrong, I was really glad my rear wasn't on the concrete bleachers last night.  However, my feet were freezing. Needed boots.  I had a blankie--oh well, Lanett lost last night so I won't have to worry about freezing again for awhile.

Today the view is fabulours from my window seat.  My sitting room is complete now.  Ok--still needs pictures.  Rats.. I forgot to get those nails for plaster walls--if you haven't tried them you should.  Otherwise you have to pretend your livingroom  wall was fired on the day the Fort Tyler battle was fought just across the Hooch.  People who don't know much about history or time in general will believe those stories if told with a straight face.  The battle scar was lost last year when I had my livingroom wall professionally repaired.

Peace to all on this glorious day.

Tree top awesomeness

Enjoying my treetop view of the river from my newly painted,
not quite straight dressing-writing-thinking-praying-reading-coffee drinking room.
The oak trees are gorgeous now with orange, green and a few brown leaves. Yesterday morning Duke Boy and I were out having coffee and conversation before church and got to experience the water oak shedding its leaves.   So beautiful looking up and watching them swirl their way to the ground.  Almost forgot what a pain it will be to get them all out of the drain at our back door.

Speaking of coffee, Duke Boy usually fills my cup in the morning when I am blogging.  Now I'm upstairs--HEY, I'M UP HERE!!.  Room service???
Bitter with the sweet.  I didn't have to ask him to turn down "Morning Joe". It's so quiet except for the ticking of a new clock from my Mom--a birthday present--purple with a peace sign--you rock, Mom.

Praying for healing for several friends and family this morning.  Praying for peace in the world.  Praying for healing in relationships.

Holiday Hope, November 15th at noon at Shawmut United Methodist Church in Valley, AL is sponsored by the Pastoral Institute.  I 'll present a seminar on facing the holidays for the first time after the death of a loved one. Lunch will be served. It's free.  Call 334-768-2341 to reserve your place.

This huge beauty is showcased from my window this morning.

Dancing, painting, praying

Bonnie Raitt is a marvelous entertainer and didn't disappoint last Saturday night in Columbus, GA.  I stayed in my seat until the last song in the encore--then it was time to dance.  I'd never attended a concert in the River Center where the crowd was very polite and sedate, but finally I was joined by several others who'd been longing to express some of that built up passion brought on by her music.  Thanks, Bonnie.

The gal whose name escapes me ...who did her lead up music was wonderfully talented.  She had a great voice and played several instruments.  Her band included another guitar player and a cello player, very cool.

Great meal at The Loft before the concert.  Food, service, and atmosphere were all excellent. Trick or treat in downtown Columbus was fun to experience with lots of little kids in costumes and adults too--some very interesting.  Columbus is a great little city to frolic in.

Thanks too to my peeps that provide my companionship and ride for such a great night.

Amazingly close to finishing my dressing room.  It's proving to be a fun place to start my day.  It will be even cozier when I get the door painted and figure out what I want to do with my closet.  HMMM??  Door, curtain, ?? Doors hide a world of sin.  Doors make space get lost in the room too.  More to come.

Plants are the basement, in the house, in the garage.  Lizards are probably in the basement, in the house, and in the garage.  Let's hope only critters who are green and have legs came in.  I'm ok with a lizard or two.  Last winter, I think?  We had a snake in the basement--don't tell my Mom.  She will never visit my home again.  It was on top of the frig --either trying to get to the ice or get warm?? The pest control man and Duke boy said it went out the way it came in---spoken by men who knew that there are 10000000000 places for snakes to hide in our basement.

Prayers for several close friends who are in different stages of cancer treatments.  Remember to get your mammogram.  1 in 8 women have breast cancer, I believe that's the stat.  Sad.  Pray.

Wacky day

I am trying an experiment in wacky-ness this morning.  Duke Boy is still sleeping and I know he's going to hate it.  I got my chair out of the corner of the living room  and turned it to face the window . I can see the Hooch and my river garden.  That's not the wackyest part.  I have it on some of those things that you raise a bed up with.  But wow--what a view!  The sun is coming up now and I can see the river.  Cool.  12 years in this house--didn't see this view---and I'm in my year of my 50s--time!!

I saw what I think is a beaver in my river garden this week.  There is a red mound of dirt near my trees where I hang my hammock.  Rockman thinks it's a fox den--I think it's a misplaced beaver dam.  I think a beaver said, "Darn, I'm sick of all this washing away of my hard work.  I'm heading for higher ground."  Maybe I'll get to see his/her cute wobbly butt today.

Shazam--- I can put this idea to work upstairs in my sitting room when I finish painting.  An upstairs fruit basket turnover with my furniture--uh, oh, Duke Boy is stirring upstairs---I just need a chaise lounge --I've always wanted one.  Be strong---he's downstairs---outside with Callie--wait for it...

I just opened the window--chilly-- crows fussing, the train whistle, my cardinal,  3 squirrels running the trees, orange, yellow, green leaves, clack of the train going by across the river
---Duke Boy behind me ,"it look terrible".  Grin on his face as I get my morning kiss.  He's knows I'm a cracked pot--aren't we all?

More birds have joined the chorus--Duke Boy  cooking breakfast.  Inspired by the speckled grits from a stop off at the Callaway Country Store yesterday.

Time for socks--a little chilly and breezy.  Also time to make room for plants in the basement today.  Oh Lawd, that means the annual climbing over them in a few short weeks to get to my Christmas boxes.

Several dear friends and loved ones are struggling with serious illnesses and losses.  I'm praying for all this morning as I feel the chill of this wonderful new day of hope and promise.

Peace and a new look out into God's October Birthmonth day.

More birthmonth stories

My Birthmonth continues to uplift and encourage me to be enamored with its gorgeousness. Yesterday I took time to piddle and play until threaten of darkness drove me indoors.  Pansies procured last weekend are now all in dirt beyond the teeny life- sucking six pack from the pansy farm.  Miraculous that even the ones lying on their sides looking beyond dead have resurrected after abundant dirt and the gift of water.  Much like the original resurrection story.

Gourds, a pumpkin, and pansies decorate my porch with their fall cuteness.  The gourds are from Linda aka Nana at Bluffton Street Antiques.  She has more for sale if you are interested.  She and her husband must have quite a garden because Duke Boy cooked yummy mustard greens for lunch that came from her.  My booth is overflowing with cool items that need a new home.

Tonight is the TV premier of "October Baby" on GMC TV.  This film is a creation of my nephews, The Erwin Brothers.  My favorite line in the movie, "things are rarely black or white" delivered by the deputy.  It's a good movie for your pre-teens and up.

While I'm writing I can hear acorns pumelling the roof of my neighbor's shed.  I brought a handful in this morning.  They are such beautiful colors and yes,...cute.

Peace to all from the Hooch.

October, my month!

It's fair weather--as in time to go to the fair.  I remember that one of the advantages of growing up in Birmingham was that it was home to the Alabama State Fair for all of my youth.  I also remember that I thought it came to town for my birthday.  Schools were let out early at least one day of that week so students could go to the fair. I think we were supposed to go to the exhibits, and we did--sometimes--you had to see the hogs, and chickens--we were city slickers.  The Midway was the happening place though--the rides, the games, the weird sideshows--my Mother never took us in those--You could win a huge teddy bear for a nickel--or a million nickles.  The first one I ever remember seeing anyone that I knew win was my sister's now husband.  He won her a huge black and white bear.  I was in 8th grade and that was all about loving someone when you were willing to pitch nickles, and then tote this giant stuffed bear all around for your sweetie.  It would be another few years until a boy did that for me.

October is such a magical month.  I was born.  Monarchs are migrating to Mexico.  Pansies and "Johnny-jump-ups, aka violas, mums, pumpkins, cooler days, warm sunshine, birthday cake, birthday lunches, birthday cards.  Yes, it's an all about me month.

How are you celebrating October and fall?  Gardening, painting, visiting with friends.

I took today and wrote out my prayer list and then I wrote some notes to those people on my prayer lists. I like cards so much that I think everyone must.  Maybe I will make that my goal for October to pray and write more cards to those in my prayers.  Better goals than "musts".

Peace from my glorious spot on the Hooch.

Martha Stewart's recipe for grandbaby Jude's birthday. Duke Boy added pecans to the layers.

The sad spot on the outside of this cake came when Duke Boy couldn't get the cake dome to release it from it's grasp. After sitting near the stove for a few minutes all that butter let go of it's grip.  I wish I had a recording of the birthday song--hoo-lar-e-us!

Younger than Paris time

Bonjour to my reader from France.  I was sadden to discovered that if I move there I will be a day older than I am now. Not a whole day of course but just closer to my next decade than I am in this time zone. I'm guessing it would be worth it.  I had lunch in Opelika on Central Time on my birthday just so I could savor my youth for a moment longer. My wrinkles never know what to do when I go shopping there and then have to rush home.

I am proud to say I made it through an entire workday without a nap.  I was excited to return and all my clients remembered their appointments.  Hurrah.  I do think those companies that have the little tents where their employees go to catch a few ZZZs have the right idea.  There is some research  somewhere (?) to support naps promoting increased creativity.  Ms. Grace Guthrie probably knew that long before the research.  She was my 4th and 5th grade teacher--I --we had her for two years because she loved our class so much.  Or at least that was her party line and we all fell for it.  She was a robust, energetic woman who came to work looking beautiful everyday, I thought.  She wore skirts with a tucked in blouse, a beautiful broach or scarf and her hose and heels.  Back to the nap part--everyday after lunch she read to us from the Bible and The Bobbsey Twins.  I can still see her sitting on that desk with her skirt all tucked around and that straight back while she lulled us--or at least me-- into a restful, contented place with her wonderful storytelling voice. I am getting weepy just writing this because she made school and her classroom such a great place to be.  I don't know if she's still living.  I never knew much about her personal life back then either.  She was my teacher and a person to be respected and looked up to and we did.  Thanks Ms. G.

I hope someone will say that about me and the way and I do my job. Time to get ready for another day in my part of the  world where I'm still younger than I am in Paris.  Au revoir.

Napping and working

Hit the small appliance trifecta for my BD. Microwave, coffee maker and fry daddy.  Sounds like I cook. I don't plan to take that up in my last year of my 50s. I have a great chef in my life already.  There's some kind of negative saying about too many cooks in the kitchen.  He did stretch his taste buds this evening with sushi.  He liked it.

Tomorrow is back to work.  I'm not sure what I'll do without that afternoon nap.  I've had one every afternoon for two weeks.

The good news :the work week will be shorter since I took the day off to play for my BD.

Peace to all from the Valley.

Collaxing

Home to all the creature comforts--washer/dryer in the basement, little food in the frig, unpainted dressing room, my own bed--yes, my own bathroom-yes.  Just got up from my Sunday nap.

Today is my last day to be 58.  Weather is cool, rainy and  great  for napping.

Orange Beach and Colorado Springs all in one summer.  Pretty fabulous.  Had a great visit with old friends. we'd not seen in about 20 years.  Keep them in your prayers as they are fighting cancer.  We had a great time viewing the inter coastal waterway by boat from their condo to the restaurant where I gracefully exited the boat and clunked by face on the pier post.  John was kind enough to deposit me in the sand on our return trip.  The highlight of the boat trip was watching a family(pod) of dolphins play in the water.  They were having a grand ole time leaping and circling.  The Monarch butterflies and their flight to Mexico were also part of our vacation experience.  Flowers outside of our condo were covered in them.  Sadly so was the shoreline with those who didn't make it.

So glad I got to relax in such a lovely spot with such great friends and family.

Prayers and peace and birthdays

Just noticed this post never was published.  I'm posting anyway even though this good man is now in the arms of the Father.  May peace and love continue to surround his family.

Praying for a sister-by-love and her family this morning as they keep vigil with their brother, father, granddad, uncle, husband, and good man. I remember when my family came together 10 years ago to sing and release my Dad into God's arms.  My Dad always did his best to make things good for my family so it was difficult to believe that goodness wasn't leaving with him.  We have found over the years how to continue that goodness--each of his kids in our own way--as we care for our families and for our Mom.
Most days more persistence than perfection.  He and Mom taught us not to give up and that the Heavenly Father is always here.  I know my sister-in-love knows this sustaining love and I pray her family will feel surrounded by this love as they keep vigil.

Lucy is 27 and still a kid at heart.

I am observing this awesome beach as I write these words.  Time to get down there and soak it up. Fabulous day yesterday with Hedgie Girl celebrating her birthday.  She is now the age that I was when I decided to marry her Dad.  Seems weird. I am still that young woman myself some days.  Being on the beach helps stir many of those memories.  Told her yesterday that Gulf Shores was the first place her feet ever hit the sand.  She was about six months old and hated the sand, she screamed with each touch of her feet to it. Fast forward 27 years where we ran around being silly and snapping pictures with the sunset with our feet in that same soft sand.

Take time to tell those you love that you love. them. Don't wait.  Seize the day.

Peace from the beach.

Walking in the sand

Amazing day at the beach.  Perfect temperature--water still sends a slight shiver if you baby step your way in, sky blue, blue, blue and blue.  Good company.

Great Big Ole Beach Hat is a must!

Dippin our toes in the water upon our arrival yesterday.
Peace for the journey.

Rocky Mountain tripping

Oh what fun to travel with Hedgie Girl.  Here we are  in the "Garden of the Gods" in Colorado Springs. This is a FREE park.  It was so lovely.  The weather was just amazing.  I sported my shirt like a cape--batgirl style since it was too warm to wear it.  This picture was taken before I took out a section of loose rocks with my rear end.  No damage just a free purple and blue souvenier of the day on my rumpus. This is what happens when people in their 50s attempt to keep pace with 7 and 9 year olds.  Keep in mind I am fast approaching the LAST year of my 50s. I think we might have taken a wrong turn on the trail which led to my bruises.

The big guy will be soon be Major Michaels in the USAF

Another thing that happens when you hang out with 7 and 9 year olds.  Eye rolling... and she isn't even in her 50s.  Pike's Peak was just behind those rolling eyes.  "America the Beautiful" was inspired by that Peak.  I can only imagine how much in awe Katharine Bates must have been in 1893.  She had come to teach at Colorado College when she traveled to the Peak. Colorado College is anotther beautiful spot in Colorado Springs.

Traveling from a city of 3000 to a city of over 400,000 was quite an adventure.  We had a good trip on Frontier Airlines.  The only gripe I had was having to pay $20 to check a bag. We were offered that courtesy of a free check from Atlanta which Hedgie Girl heard me decline since I missed the free part.  After we dragged our bags to row 25--the one right next to the flushing toilet in the back of the plane--I had to carry mine since it was too wide to roll the aisle.  ... we chose to check our bags on the return trip but no free check was offered.  I even did my best Southern begging ,smiling plea for free, oh well.  Since I didn't want to literally air my dirty laundry to the CS airport to dig out my 3 oz. liquids, I paid my $20.  If I'd waited and checked it at the plane it would have been free.  I would have had to do the same drag through the airport first--GRRRR.

Thanks to the Michaels family for being great hosts.

Time traveling

Excited about traveling tomorrow so I've given up sleeping.  Figure I'll grab some sleep on the way to another time zone that's behind us. Hopefully, at 3AM, I packed the clothes I'll need for this short visit. I'm going to see folks who've seen me after a night of sleeping on the floor after a packed house at Grandmother's at Christmas.  This is with 16 or so folks sharing 2 bathrooms .  Perhaps they won't be surprised by my casual clothes?

I'm really hoping I'll be able to cram my suitcase into an overhead bin.  If not, I'll pay the extra $20 to let it get it's own crammed in spot under the plane.

Time for one more nap before work.

Peace from the river.

Peace from the garden

Time to get crackin'.  Two more days then a flight to Colorado Springs to see my niece and her family.  Traveling with Hedgie Girl.  She and I have never flown alone anywhere so a new adventure for us.
Wonderful Monday to all of you.
Peace from the neatest oak in my garden.

Friday night lights in Bama

My date for crusing

Welcome to Greece and Saudi Arab. This post is about Alabama.  Hopefully this will make you want to visit.

Friday night cruisin’
Duke Boy and I took a back roads of Alabama ride Friday night in the convertible.  Cool, breezy, convertible therapy kind of evening.  I know gas prices don’t lend themselves to much cruising but It’s been so hot we haven’t left town much lately and certainly not with the top down.  Oskar’s on Blue Creek, near Still Waters, was our destination.  We took our time getting there which was good since we didn’t want to miss any of the sights and all that breeze along the way on Highway 50.  Most of the sights were rural: green fields, farm houses, and two puppies that needed to be behind a fence.
Oskar’s is a welcoming place with a menu to make your mouth water.  If you order the crab claws for an appetizer just go ahead and order your potato and salad because it’s plenty for a meal.  We had already ordered a steak to split so we forced ourselves to enjoy it. Our waitress was friendly and attentive without being intrusive on our date night.   We laughed when she asked about dessert but had her name them anyway.  We decided just hearing them called out was filling enough so we passed.
Duke Boy knew the way back to Highway 50 from 49S so we proceeded down a road new to me.  We got to pass through a beautiful area which I assume is Blue Creek?  We saw Nick’s restaurant and made a mental note for another date night complete with convertible therapy.  When we got to the turn off to 50, I told Duke Boy that I was enjoying this road (49S) so we stayed on it.  We got to wave at our Lanett folks in Reeltown where Lanett lost a hard fought game by one point.  Sorry guys.  I watched them beat Lafayette the week before, on date night, and had a wonderful time.  I don’t even really care for football but the weather, the crowd, the band, and the team, all made for a fun football evening.  OK back to riding…We finally got to the intersection where you turn left to go to Notasulga—don’t know the road #??  I recognized this as our turn, and we did.  This part of the ride was very interesting and we were able to have a conversation about mules and donkeys.  If you travel that road you will discover why.   Lots of one or the other of those creatures along the way…Duke Boy says they were mules.  I asked him if he was sure or if he was just making that up.  He said he was sure.  Hmm?
Since we haven’t had much War Eagle time lately we drove through the campus on our way home.  The city was alive with fans gearing up for their tailgates.  We decided we could poke some dessert in by the time we got to Tiger Town so we stopped at Chill, the yogurt shop.  If you ask for a sample cup you can just about avoid having to pay for dessert.  We should have...the caramel and vanilla custard is pretty darn yummy.  We even ran into some Valley folks who had the same idea.
I confess that we stopped at the Cusseta exit and put the top up. I was cold. What a great feeling in mid-September.  What great therapy on date night.

More praying

Walking with a girlfriend last night when she asked me how long I'd been walking---my reply, "since I was about one (1) , I guess?"  Of course, that wasn't her real question.  Answer: "Just a few steps, just now."
Fall makes me wanna do new stuff: walk, hang out in my garden, write.

The coolness on my shoulder from the window open now for two days in a row with no air conditioning humming.  Well ok, the unit in the bedroom--not quite ready to give that one up yet.

Today is the 11th anniversary of 9/11.  Pray for all of us as we remember that sad day in our history.

Hopefully, you are still praying without ceasing from yesterday so it won't be hard to continue.
Peace from the Hooch.

Help it's fall and I love to get up

Had a pretty severe blood loss yesterday about sunset. On my fabulous back patio garden trying to watch the sunset.  Damp with bug spray but the mosquitoes must have been starving or I just looked like a tasty treat. Almost gave up and came in but instead put on more repellent. Hopefully, I'm not West Nile infected now--heed the warnings.

This morning my window is open and my coffee is getting chilly quicker than usual.  I don't mind.  My birds are singing.  My neighbors cats went to live on the farm--they really did--my chipmunks are doing happy dances complete with chest bumps to celebrate.  Not sure if they, cats not chipmunks,  were the ones who kept the coyote at bay but I saw him on Thursday and we heard something eat something last night--could have been the owl but I didn't hear him giving a hoot.

Pray without ceasing.  I Thessalonians 5:17. Conversations about life count.  I think.  I hope.  I pray. That was one. I hope. Mondays are usually great days for such conversations.  as are Tuesday-Sundays.
Praying you will have a day touched with the wonder of the coolness of fall.  The upright kind.  Not the can't get up variety.

Hummingbird reprimands

Gardening is the best way to get a knee pain.

Yesterday was hot but not the fainting, call 911, where is the ice water kind?

It was more : I think it's time to water the flowers for minute and get my shorts soaking wet so they can dry while I'm pulling weeds, time to sit on the stool and get up close and personal to those weeds, is it time to eat lunch yet? kind of hot.

I mainly tackled the hummingbird vine again. After I'd pulled most of it off my bushes, I had a strange visitation from a hummingbird.  My back patio is my spot to enjoy the river which it what I was doing while resting a minute from the sweaty part of weeding.  This hummer flew all around, hover over my head, and then flew away. While it was going on I figure it was because my hat--sorta orangy-pink was in my lap, but as I write I think he was ticked off about the vines.

Also had a visit from a couple of wasps .  Luckily, I got away without any stings.  My jasmine vine is the most prolific--well maybe not more than the hummingbird vine.. It require frequent pruning.  Since I've been such an absent gardener this summer, it has overtaken it's small flower shaped trellis and the wasp found it cozy, I guess.  Needless to say it's still overtaking.  I keep wasp spray and thought I'd done the trick but later in the day saw one flying around the viney trellis.  This must be why you spray in the evening during their return to the nest for a good nights sleep.

My front garden looks much nicer except for the wasp section.

Ramblings from the Hooch

Long day today.  I haven't posted in so long that I forgot my password.

My booth at Bluffton Antiques is full of lots of good stuff.  Worth the drive even from Malaysia!

My fundraiser with all the cupcakes was wonderful.  Thanks to all of you who helped.

Who saw "Coma" last nite on A&E.  I read that book way back when and remember feeling terrified.  I felt the same way last night but couldn't turn it off.  I don't remember the last time I watched something with that sinister element. How brave I am!

Currently reading a Jodi Piccoult book, Lone Wolf.  She is such a great writer.  My Kindle wouldn't work this morning and I was really upset because I only have a few chapters left.  Tonight it's glowing again, hurrah.  Of course, that's a good reason to stick to the book--the one made with paper.

A fun moment this week linking up with a friend I haven't seen in nearly 30 years.  Technology is so great--when it's work.  Hey Kay.  Look forward to more fun connections.

Cup cake truces and counting chickens

240 cupcakes came out of our oven today.
We are still married and no one died.
 I only got one pan--24 in a pan--a little too brown--not burned.

This was the beginning of a whine on Friday.

Give me  240 cupcakes over peeling 16 dozen  boiled eggs any day.    Some of those eggs were very resistant to being peeled.  Guess they weren't ready to give up the idea of being a chicken yet.  Counting chickens before...you know the rest of it.

Speaking of a countdown to our Tuesday fundraiser.  Duke Boy smoked 100 pounds of brisket yesterday thanks to a wonderful loaner smoker from Grills and Frills in Valley,AL.  200+ people are joining us for lunch to hear about the War Eagle wedding and to cheer on the other teams --I won't go into all the teams represented except to say Roll Tide.  The money we raise supports our Hope Fund so that counseling can be affordable.

Pray that Isaac will not harm those in his path.

Peace to all from the Valley.

Living creatively

Live creatively, friends.  If someone falls into sin, forgivingly restore him, saving your critical comments for yourself.  You might be needing forgivenes before the day's out....Each of you must take responsibilty for doing the creative best you can with your own. life.
Selections from Galatians 6:1-5  The Message

Death and life are in the power of the tongue.
                                                                 Proverbs 18:21  NKJV
This week I'm preparing for my annual fundraiser for my office.  I believe the above scripture are good wisdom for the stressfilled moments of the next few days.

The next best thing to being wise oneself is to live in a circle of those who are.
                                          C.S. Lewis
I express stress through lack of sleep, over eating, and bossiness.  Others have less kind words for the way I behave. I am fortunate that I live in a circle of wise friends as recommended by C.S.Lewis.  My circle has offered prayers, encouragement, reminders of how things are alway fun at these...,plus they've sold tickets, begged for door prizes, and will show up next week to help cook, decorate, serve, and clean up.

Then it will be nap time and not even Sunday.  Hurrah!!

Jesus loves me, this I KNOW!

Back to School Emotions

I also write news articles for the local paper here in my little town or actually for the Valley--that means Chattahoochee Valley--the towns are West Point, Lanett and Valley.  I decided to share one today that I sent to the paper yesterday.  It was a big day for Hedgie Girl as she ventured into a new job. She will be great with those kids and they will all learn something new.
Peace from the Valley.

Back to School Emotions
I have a vivid picture in my mind and in a scrapbook of my daughter’s first day of kindergarten.  She is smiling, looking adorable in her little blue jean shirt, and sparkly top. Her shoes are Velcro since we’d failed hopelessly at shoe tying 101 over the summer.  Isn’t that why God made Velcro?  She is all giggly on the ride to school which I’m thinking must indicate nerves—she really didn’t need to use hers because I had enough for both of us.  You must know that she wasn’t even going to new school.  She was going to attend a private school at our church.  My husband was the supervisor of the new headmaster.  Her teacher was also her Sunday school teacher.  Lucy loved Mrs. Daily, and so did I.
Well, those are facts but these are the feelings:  She was just four, well, five in two weeks.  Remember this was a private school and they knew she was capable of doing well in K-5.  I only worked part time and the mornings were some of our most fun times together.  We snuggled in the bed after Daddy went to work.  We fixed breakfast and ate together food that she often served me from the Fisher Price kitchen that stood in the corner of our family kitchen.
Just two months early Mrs. Daily had reminded me that Lucy will need to be on time every day for K-5.  Like I said earlier we were drop –ins for K-4.  When I dropped her off “on time” for her first day of K-5 she wanted to walk in by herself.  I kissed her at the classroom door.  She turned, walked in, and never looked back.
I found my husband and had a good cry over a cup of coffee.  He has continued to comfort me over the years when developmentally I wasn’t ready for my child’s next milestone.  Where will your comfort come from this week, month, over the years as you watch your little ones venture out into the world of education?
That same girl begins her first day at Lanett High School today…She will supervise students in the AP Distance Learning classes.  I pray that there will be other Ms. Dailys there to assist her in her new duties.  She is fortunate to have a sweet husband who helped her organize the computers in the room for the first day of school.  They make a good team.  She is excited today and probably didn’t look back as she headed out for her first day at her new school. She is a graduate of Lanett High so it’s not so new.  She most likely is wearing something sparkly.
It’s important to stay connected to family, friends, ministers, counselors as the needs of your child and your family change.  You have to stay educated while you send your little ones out to be educated.  Your job is 24/7 for a long while but you don’t have to do it alone.
Here is that sparkley girl all grown up on her first day of school.

Napping

Never underestimate the power of a nap--especially a Sunday afternoon nap.  Mine was so wonderful that it made the sun come out !  After lunch I thought I'd have to put my head on the table and now--ah the possibilities....

Hope you are resting on this beautiful Sunday.

Peace from the Valley.

Painting--weeding--life

I am sitting again after a day of painting--priming the room.  I'm really liking that primer color!  I usually like painting but I just am not into it any more.  Not sure why.  Think it's called life--too many other things to do.
Weeding ,for instance, I did take five minutes to deal with the mayhem in my front garden.  Thought I was gonna have to call Allstate on the hummingbird vine.

Yes, I was wrong about the cable guy. He fixed my problem--well most of them.  I can DVR again--whew.
I just have some fuzzy pictures left upstairs.  He says those 10,000 miles of cable wire in my basement need redoing.  Too many splits.  He's going to make a suggestion to my cable company for how to fix it.  Wow-thanks. He was very nice.

Sleep tight --watch out for those nasty bedbugs.

To do list while waiting for the cable people

Weeding or painting???Would love to weed but I gotta get my room painted. Duke Boy got the grass cut yesterday.  Just in time since BW was starting to get lost out there.  We've both been so busy it's been difficult to get organized.

Today I can't stray from the house again because the cable people are coming.  We'll see...as my Mom would say.  I stayed home yesterday and they didn't show.  I have the word of the woman on chat line that he will come today.  Beware of those connections with those who we only know by their first name for a few moments.  She seemed very nice.  I'm hoping this time it will work out.  Of course, the definition of insanity is "doing things the same way while expecting different results".  Here I go again. I am determined to get some things done while I wait.  Yesterday it was filling the truck with recycling and making a path for the pest control man to walk in my garage.

OK, I will quit whining.  Go to Bluffton Street Collectibles and Antiques  in Lanett, AL and check out my new booth.  It has lots of cool stuff that you probably need in your home.   Actually the entire store has cool stuff.  Bring a large car or truck.

Have a groovy Saturday.  Including those in the Ukraine--thanks guys.

Mary or Martha?? and dreaming in chocolate

I have lost my list but I think China is a new viewer.  Welcome.

I've been sitting in my chair for a little bit this morning making myself settle since this week promises to be a whirlwind.  My scripture today ...Martha and Mary, I'm guessing this is a message .  I've always identified more with the Mary side since cooking and cleaning aren't in my first set of skills.  However, my weekend was more focused on my Martha side so I'm glad to renew my Mary.  Don't get scared..there was no cooking involved in my weekend... I cleaned up, set tables, and welcomed guests.

Painting... another task this weekend.  Amazing what a fresh coat of paint does to a wall.  I'm thinking I may just go with primer.  Of course, the sun is just now coming up so I haven't really gotten a good look at the wall yet.  Notice I said "the" wall.  Most rooms have 4.  Whew.  Also 2 windows and 2 doors in this one. Watch out when you buy a bargain, lovely armoire for your dressing room.  Fruit basket turnover.

Peace to all you Mary & Martha's this weekend.  The Lord bless and keep you.
Day 1 "the great wall of Hooch"

I couldn't make myself paint over this or take it down YET!

Let's go down to the river and pray

It was wet enough here today to just step outside for a baptism  but this young man and his Daddy chose the Chattahoochee instead .  He leaves to join the Marines on Sunday.  Keep him and his family in your prayers.  The new canoe, kayak put -in steps built by our neighor, Mike Crook, gave this preacher a good place to walk folks right in.

Joyful radiance

May the Lord bless and protect you; my the Lord's face radiate with joy because of you; may he be gracious to you, show you his favor, and give you his peace.
                                             Numbers 6:24-26  The Living Bible

Isn't it great to know that the Lord's face radiates with joy because of you even when you are just too tired to try anymore?

It's only Tuesday here and it feels like Friday already.  I'm giving thanks today for rain on the flowers, kind friends, and a loving family.  I'm counting on God's radiance over my face helping make the day a little easier.  What a gift to know that he is joyful over my face.   There is a makeup mirror at my Mom's house that  has an 8x magnifier on it.  I am rarely joyful when I use it.  Today I shall--my garden word, be mindful that God's face is radiating with joy because of me and I shall hold that image to give me peace today.

Prayers continue for the families touched by loss today in this Valley.   May they feel God's presence and peace today.

Courageous women and men

Posts #132 and 3004 hits.  Hope post #3000 enjoy the moments at the Olympics.

Prayers for families suffering loss this morning.  The Valley lost one of its courageous men yesterday. Amazing to watch the strength of courageous women and men during such trials.

"help of the helpless, oh, abide with me."  Wisdom of the ages this morning from my 1892 Episcopal Protestant Hymnal.

Peace to all this day.  Thank the Lord for the blessing of rain yesterday.

Go USA

How about our Gabby at the Olympics.  Isn't it something to watch all those girls.  They are amazingly beautiful.  Women's rowing was cool to watch too.  They need to come to the Hooch.  Might have to portage a little--isn't that what it's called when you have to carry the boat?

Time to make the donuts this morning.  Stay as cool as possible.  It was actually breezy and pleasant on our patio last night.

Peace and go USA.

Rainy day people

More rain songs are in order---"raindrops keep falling on my head", I know you think of Paul Newman when you hear that one.  Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.  Great movie.  Robert Redford too.  What a combo.

"Rainy night in GA."  Hope you get to sing it again tonight, Gladys.

Thinking of a great time at the beach a couple of years back with my mother, sister, and me at the beach.  We were walking at night singing songs from categories that we'd name.  It started with the moon because it was beautiful moonlit night and ended up who knows were. Try it next time you have a gathering.  Mom had some great songs from the 40s while my sister and I chimed in with other years.  A flashlight makes a great microphone or spotlight.  If you do a Gene Kelly on beach chairs be prepared to walk funny the next day.

Peace and more rain please.

Emmaus to clean sweep

"Oh my goodness!"--Shirley Temple moment yesterday.  We had rain.  I didn't even bother to get my umbrella when I left the house.  Not that I had to worry about it messing up my hair--I know, I could hear some of you thinking that!  I was tempted to do a little Gene Kelly--"singing in the rain"...Wonder how many more old movie moments I can coax out of this rain theme??  I am freed from watering this morning so I have a little time to tell you how to manage your day.    OK, here goes....Wish I knew.

I do know my scripture this morning was from Hebrews 10:24.  It stressed the importance of encouraging each other and worshipping together. Can I get an Amen?  Yesterday at the end of the day we had a shredder explosion in our office.  We had a good laugh while I was womaning the broom as I shared this Vacation Bible School story from last year.  I asked the group of they'd ever heard the word, "Emmaus"  as in Jesus' walk to.."  One precious little Southern girl said, "Yes ma'am, my momma says that about my room all the time."  We had a great laugh and didn't feel as discouraged by the event that kept us from a clean exit.  No pun intended but  I know you appreciated anyway.

Today is Wednesday. "You is kind. You is good. You is important."  The Help.  Had to get in one more movie.  I'm looking forward to the new Merle Streep & Tommy Lee Jones movie about marital therapy.  I'm really hoping the therapist doesn't come off like a dope or a violator of boundaries.  I love both of the actors and I'm hoping it'll encourage folks to call for an appointment.

By the way ---USA Gold --Women in Gymnastics--also Swimming---wahoo!

Peaceful day to you.

Blessings from the Hooch

Pakistan has clicked on today.  Welcome to the Hooch.

Praying for dear friends today who are grieving  the loss of loved ones, health, and jobs.

It sprinkled on my yard for a minute.  The day here is overcaste enough that little BW is under the ottoman anticipating a storm.  She has extra sensitive nerve endings when it comes to thunder.  Bless her.

Peace to you from the Valley today.

Hot time in the old town

I have 7839 movements on my Smart Health watch today. This must be why I am too tired to type this.  I think most of those were steps.  Watering...watering... and did I mention watering?  It is some more kinda hot here.

I'm getting some furniture at my booth at Bluffton Street Antiques.  Check it out this weekend. It will be then before I get it there.  Perhaps I can move it in the middle of the night when it's cooler.

Watching the Olympics is amazing.  I loved the opening ceremony funny James Bond episode with the Queen.  She and my Mom are the same age and even look similar but my Mom is still prettier.  Sorry Queen Elizabeth.  My Mom is also an Elizabeth as am I.  I think I was probably named after her.  I certainly have a Queen's temperament.

Have a wonderful night's sleep.

Peace.

Circle of protection

Selections from Psalm 34  The Message

When I was desperate, I called out,
and God got me out of a tight spot.

God's angel sets up a circle
of protection around us while we pray.

I have several people in mind today while posting that scripture.  Know that I carry you all in my heart. Death, sickness, difficult life decisions are among the tight spots.  I like the idea of God's angel setting up a circle of protection around me while I'm praying. Maybe that's why "my spot" in the living room corner is where I end up when I'm needing comfort, direction, inspiration?

Turn your back on sin; do something good.
Embrace peace-- don't let it get away!  also from Psalm 34

Eden's bounty revisited

Lord, I my vows to thee renew;
Scatter my sins as morning dew;
Guard my first springs of thought and will,
And with Thyself my spirit fill.
The Hymnal from the Protestant Episcopal Church in the US in 1892

This is from my latest estate sale treasures.  Tiny little book, leather, with the wonderful feathery pages.  I have added it to my devotional treasure chest for morning reading.

My Catawba lily had two blooms for a brief fleeting moment yesterday.  When I got home the hoppers had found it.  Very sad.  I need a glass dome like The Little Prince had for his rose. Great little book.

My poor magenta flocks have succumbed to the heat.  They were lovely for a minute.  I'm hoping they'll return to me next year.

Spent time this morning emptying new boxes of peaches and tomatoes into wooden bowls so that I'm tempted with Eden's bounty upon entering my kitchen.  Thank you Lord, for such deliciousness.

Peace to all this Wednesday.

Freezing weather in the Valley

So, chosen by God for this new life of love...compassion, kindness, humility, quiet strength, discipline.  ...  And regardless of what else you put on, wear love.  Colossians 3: 15 or so
                                                     The Message

Great Monday morning reminders.

My yard is watered.  I have another Catawba lily blooming--the grasshoppers ate the first one.  They can find my porch--the buzzards.  Gonna be a hot one.  Freeze your underwear before putting it on today.  It worked last night with the frozen T shirt contest at the church.

Happy, peaceful Monday to all.

Lilies, cheesestraws, peaches and Saturday on the Hooch

My Cataba lily got chomped on by the hoppers yesterday--they are unbelievable--moved it to the backporch so they'd at least have to climb for it.   This is the before pix. I can't take a pix of the after--too sad.

Unbelievable to me also that it's Saturday again.  I was ready for it.  There are some estate sales I want to catch but I'm trying to force myself not to leave the yard.  I have way too much to do plus I already own way too many earthly treasures.  I have a booth where I sell things--for Pete's sake.  Please go to Bluffton Street Antiques in Lanett and check out my Christmas in July sale.  50% off.

Quote for the day from The Upper Room on worry.  "You can't saw sawdust." Love it.  So many of our worries are just that.  Philippians 4:6 has a plan for worry.  Check it out.  Time tested.

Continue to pray for my lovely friend whose sweet husband's funeral was yesterday.  Also for a beautiful couple getting married this evening.  Peace and love to Meredith and Danny.

Have a wonderful Saturday.  Sit in the shade with some sweet tea.  If you can get your mouth on LuAnne Berlin's cheese straws to go with it --heaven.  She and Craig catered the rehearsal dinner last night .  I told her my only regret was that I'd left my purse at home and couldn't shove the cheese straws on my table in it.  Later she brought me a "go" bag full of them.  I need to hide those before Duke Boy gets up.  Her website is www.missredsplace.com so you can order your own.  Be sure and tell her I sent you so I can stay in "go" bag status.  :) Peaches from Carroll Farms in Woodbury, GA will also taste great with the above combo.

Peace.

Prayers for Colorado

Praying for the victims of the shootings in Colorado today.  So sad for those just trying to grab some final summer time fun at the movies.

Missed the rain here again yesterday.  Hoping it will come. The grasshoppers seem to grow larger as the rain continues to evade my gardens.  There were about 5 waiting on my front sidewalk last night when I got home.  I was happy to not see them chopping my plants.  I am a hopper stomper so I danced the jig into my house trying to get rid of the pesky critters.  I have a lily in a pot--it has a bloom and they've eaten all my others so I'm hoping to see at least this one open.

Praying for my friend as she says her good-byes to her husband today.

Peace to all and prayers for the world today.

The season of presence

Georgia, the Eurasian country, has joined the audience.  I greet you as a fellow Georgian. I have lost count of countries--I think it's 30 now.  This makes me smile.

Yesterday was a sad and wonderful time to be with a beloved friend and co worker and her family. ( We are also kin through our husbands.) Her husband died and everyone gathered for support and comfort.  I am so fortunate to work for the Pastoral Institute where everyone knows there are days when the only way to be a good employee is to be there for friends and family in times of  joy and sorrow.

This morning I've got to rush out and set the sprinklers since all the rain went another direction yesterday.

Peace to all on this Thursday.  Let it rain down like a gentle river.

Planting, peaches and naps

Japan has joined the viewing of this space.  Wow.  Thanks.

Got an activity watch and logged 12,000+ steps, twists, and turns yesterday.  So much for Sabbath rest--I did have a 45 minute nap too.  Sundays are a must for naps--some of the best sleep in the world happens on Sunday afternoons at this house.  Must be a God thing that those naps are the most refreshing of the entire week??

I visited nurseries over the weekend and plants phlox near my front door and walk--they smell wonderful.  I never knew this about them.  Mine aren't tall--I hope they will be next year.  Not sure what variety these are since these actually came from Kroger.  They WATER their plants--very important!!! I went to a large chain store and all their plants were crispy--it was very sad.  The worst part was that workers were standing around not saving these beauties.  Rocky Branch Garden Center in Pine Mountain had beautiful caladiums for 50% off and I got 3 pots which had several plants in them.  Also some tall Tick seed and another yellow plant in that family that I can't name.  I had to do a brain scan to remember caladiums.

Peaches are also coming in strong at Carroll Farms in Woodbury, GA.  Delicious.  They also smell wonderful.

Garden views

Waiting for a wonderful soaking rain.  I'm not watering yet since I believe it will happen today.  Witnessed wonderful rain on Lake Harding last night.  The lake was white-capping and people were scurrying for shore.

I did take a few shots of my front garden to share with you today.  Have an unthirsty Thursday.
Peace.

Hydration in July

Breakfast in the garden.  OK ,it was bowl of cereal with blueberries and strawberries, but the view was amazing.  I saved the life of a cardinal this morning by sending the local chat leaping from my yard.

You have another Bible School opportunity tonight.  The children are all amazingly sweet, smart, and the teachers are all good looking.  Present company included.

Remember to water your plants and yourself.  Hydration is key!

Peace to all on this terrific Thursday.

Urbanus tells all

Welcome to my blog, Ukraine.

I am watering to maintain the life of my garden.  My black-eyed Susans have finally decided that they want to live.  My zinnias are being temperamental and demanding daily watering in order to show off their cuteness. I believe we might be kin.

Last evening Vacation Bible School started at Shawmut UMC and we had a heap of children.  After our opening event we spent the evening in the cool breeze of the front lawn leaping on the water slide, decorating the sidewalk with chalk, and making fish name tags.  If you are in the area bring your children tonite at 5:30.  They will have fun, learn Bible stories, and be in the company of some new friends.  We will even feed them a snack supper.  I will be the storyteller, Urbanus, the sea urchin.  The name is actually from Romans 16.  It was my scripture this morning and I was needing a sea urchin name.  Don't you love it?

Peace to all.  Stay cool.

Red, white and blueberry kind of day

Great 4th in the garden.  Peach and vanilla  homemade ice cream, blueberry cobbler, cupcakes and iced star sugar cookies.  Oh, almost forgot chocolate dipped strawberries--in blue icing with white sprinkles from Hedgie boy.  We indulged in the ribs, chicken and other unvegan foods in the house where there was air conditioning and no flies.

I ended the day in the garden listening to fireworks from all over the valley.

Lovely day spent with family.  Happy 4th to all.

Bucket list:  Macy's 4th of July celebration in Manhattan.

Cool in Poland??

Poland and Turkey have joined the readership.  I wonder if it's cooler there?  Today I worked in an office without air conditioning and tomorrow I won't.  I'm not sure how people who work in hot environments do it??  I know my Grandmother never had air conditioning.  She had a huge, wonderful wooden box fan that was as much a part of the livingroom as was her sofa.  Her door was open spring and summer and sometimes fall and winter.  If the screen was latched I have no memory of it.  How did her house stay so cool?

My garden is flourishing despite the heat.  I was gone for a week and Duke boy was in charge of watering.  Everytime I called he reported what plant he'd taken the weedeater to.  He complained about all the work to keep things watered.  I knew he was half kidding but I wasn't sure what I was coming home to.  Pleasantly surprised.  Thanks DB.

My niece lives in Colorado Springs and reports tonight that the fires are 70% contained.  Prayers need to continue for all.

Peace and cooler weather.  The rain here today was a welcome blessing.

Computerless garden

This was my morning to be totally frustrated since I just lost my post I was working on.  Too bad because it was my best ever....Sorry you will never see.

Now I'm going out to pick blueberries and be in my happiest place...in my garden where there are NO computers.

Have a fabulous Friday.
